Turning community experience and research into better policy, stronger systems, and lasting change Strong community programmes can save lives and improve livelihoods, but lasting impact requires supportive policies, credible evidence, effective coordination, and decision-makers who can translate knowledge into action. OHRI’s Policy Advocacy, Research and Evidence pillar bridges the gap between community realities, scientific evidence, and policy decisions. We generate practical evidence from our programmes, engage policymakers and institutions, strengthen One Health capacity, and ensure that lessons from communities inform policies and future interventions.
OUR 2036 AMBITION
🏛️ One Health Policy Engagement
OHRI will use evidence from communities and programme implementation to contribute to stronger policies and coordinated action across human health, animal health, agriculture, and environmental sectors.
2036 targets:
- Produce 10 evidence-informed policy briefs.
- Participate in 50 national and state-level policy forums.
- Support 5 states to develop One Health action plans by 2032.
- Contribute to the adoption of 15 policy recommendations.
- Support One Health action plans with a combined target of N500 million in budget allocation.
OHRI will engage government ministries, departments and agencies, legislators, development partners, civil society, academia, and community representatives to ensure that policy discussions reflect evidence and community priorities.
Our early policy priorities include integrated human and animal health surveillance and sustainable financing for community health worker programmes.
🔬 Implementation Research
OHRI will generate practical evidence on what works, what does not, and how programmes can be improved and scaled.
2036 targets:
- Conduct 20 implementation research studies.
- Publish 15 peer-reviewed articles.
- Achieve at least 100 citations from research outputs.
- Use research findings to improve or adapt 30 programme components.
Research will focus on priority areas including:
- Community health worker and community animal health worker effectiveness and cost-effectiveness
- Integrated disease surveillance
- Climate adaptation outcomes
- Community antimicrobial resistance interventions
- Food security programme impact
OHRI will build partnerships with Nigerian universities and international research institutions to strengthen study design, analysis, publication, and research uptake.
📚 Knowledge Translation & Capacity Building
Research creates greater impact when evidence is understood, shared, and applied. OHRI will therefore invest in knowledge translation and professional capacity development.
2036 targets:
- Train 500 One Health practitioners, with 80% achieving the required competency standard.
- Host 50 knowledge exchange events reaching approximately 5,000 participants.
- Build at least 30 partnerships through knowledge exchange activities.
- Disseminate One Health evidence and learning to 100,000 people through multiple media and communication channels.
Training will cover practical One Health competencies including surveillance integration, antimicrobial resistance, outbreak response, climate adaptation, community engagement, and other priority areas identified through OHRI’s programmes.
