Healthy animals are essential to healthy communities and resilient livelihoods. Through our Animal Health & Livestock Development pillar, OHRI is expanding access to community-based veterinary services, strengthening livestock productivity, preventing zoonotic diseases, and promoting safer animal production systems. Our approach brings animal health services closer to livestock-owning communities through trained Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), veterinary supply points, disease prevention campaigns, vaccination, screening, farmer training, and improved livestock management.
Our 2036 Ambition
By 2036, OHRI aims to:
- Train and deploy 500 Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) across 10 states, with a 70% two-year retention rate.
- Deliver 50,000 animal treatments through community-based animal health services.
- Establish 50 community veterinary supply points.
- Vaccinate 80,000 dogs against rabies, achieving 80% coverage.
- Screen 10,000 cattle, sheep and goats for brucellosis.
- Train 5,000 community members in safe livestock handling and zoonotic disease prevention.
- Train 5,000 farmers in improved livestock husbandry.
- Establish 20 artificial insemination service points.
- Support the formation of 50 livestock marketing cooperatives.
- Train poultry and fish farmers in antimicrobial stewardship and biosecurity.
- Establish residue monitoring across 100 poultry farms and 50 fish farms.
- Support 50 farms toward antibiotic-free certification.
- Promote climate-adapted livestock practices and heat-stress management.
These interventions are designed to improve animal health, protect household incomes, reduce preventable zoonotic disease risks, and strengthen the resilience of livestock-dependent communities.
Specific Funding Need for this Pillar
Pillar 2 Fundraising Target: US$1.5 Million
OHRI is seeking US$1.5 million in dedicated funding for Animal Health & Livestock Development to scale community animal health services and livestock resilience interventions through 2036.
