Climate Resilience & Environmental Health

Climate change is increasingly affecting the health, livelihoods, water security, and safety of vulnerable communities. OHRI addresses these interconnected challenges by helping communities prepare for climate risks, improve access to safe water and sanitation, reduce exposure to indoor air pollution, strengthen early warning and disaster response systems, and manage environmental conditions that contribute to disease transmission. Our approach recognises that healthy communities depend on healthy environments. Through locally led adaptation, practical environmental health interventions, clean energy solutions, and community preparedness, OHRI is working to build resilience that lasts.

Our 2036 Ambition

By 2036, OHRI aims to:

💧 Expand Access to Safe Water & Sanitation

  • Provide 250,000 people with access to clean water.
  • Rehabilitate 500 community boreholes, with a target of 95% remaining functional after 12 months.
  • Construct 50,000 improved latrines.
  • Support 100 communities to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
  • Conduct 10,000 hygiene promotion sessions, targeting a 60% handwashing practice rate.

OHRI will strengthen community ownership by establishing Water User Committees, supporting local maintenance systems, conducting water-quality monitoring, and promoting sustainable management of community water infrastructure.

🔥 Promote Clean Energy & Healthier Homes

  • Distribute 20,000 improved cookstoves by 2036, with a target of 75% continued use.
  • Deploy 100 community air-quality monitors, with 90% data-upload compliance.
  • Train 500 community clean-energy champions, reaching approximately 10,000 households.

These interventions will help communities reduce exposure to household air pollution while building local capacity to promote cleaner cooking practices and monitor environmental health risks.

🌦️ Strengthen Community Climate Adaptation

  • Develop climate adaptation plans in 200 communities.
  • Establish 50 community early-warning systems by 2032.
  • Train 1,000 disaster-response volunteers by 2036.
  • Strengthen community capacity to respond to floods, droughts, heat waves and other climate-related hazards.

OHRI will support communities to conduct participatory climate-risk assessments, develop locally owned five-year adaptation plans, and track practical measures such as tree planting, water harvesting, and flood-resilient infrastructure.

🦟 Reduce Environmental Drivers of Malaria

Climate and environmental conditions can create or expand mosquito breeding habitats. OHRI will integrate environmental management into community-level malaria prevention by:

  • Mapping and modifying 500 vector breeding sites in 100 communities.
  • Training 200 community vector-control volunteers.
  • Introducing biological approaches, including larvivorous fish and biological larvicides, at 100 breeding sites.
  • Linking environmental vector control with community climate adaptation and malaria programmes.

☀️ Protect Communities from Extreme Heat

Extreme heat is an emerging occupational and public-health threat, particularly for outdoor workers and vulnerable communities.

By 2036, OHRI aims to:

  • Protect 100,000 outdoor workers and community members from heat-related illness.
  • Establish heat early-warning and response systems in 100 communities.
  • Train 200 health workers in heat-related illness management.
  • Distribute 10,000 heat-protection guides.
  • Train 5,000 outdoor workers in heat-protection practices.
  • Establish 50 community cooling stations.
  • Support 200 homes and 20 buildings with cool-roof interventions.
  • Contribute to national occupational heat standards and Nigeria’s heat-health action planning.

Our Approach

OHRI will work with communities, local governments, technical agencies, health workers, environmental authorities and other partners to make climate resilience practical and locally owned.

We will invest in:

Safe Water → Rehabilitating water infrastructure and strengthening community water management.

Better Sanitation → Supporting improved household sanitation and community-led approaches to ending open defecation.

Clean Energy → Expanding access to improved cookstoves and community air-quality monitoring.

Climate Preparedness → Helping communities identify risks, develop adaptation plans, and establish early-warning systems.

Environmental Vector Control → Tackling mosquito breeding sites through environmentally responsible interventions.

Heat-Health Protection → Preparing workers, health systems and communities for increasing extreme-heat risks.

A Proposed Investment Opportunity

PILLAR 3 FUNDRAISING TARGET: US$1.8 MILLION

OHRI proposes mobilising US$1.8 million to accelerate implementation of Climate Resilience and Environmental Health interventions across its target communities.

This proposed fundraising target would support:

1. Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

  • Borehole rehabilitation and water-quality monitoring
  • Community water-management systems
  • Improved household sanitation
  • Hygiene promotion and behaviour change

2. Clean Energy & Air Quality

  • Improved cookstove distribution
  • Community air-quality monitoring
  • Clean-energy champion training
  • Household clean-cooking education

3. Climate Adaptation & Early Warning

  • Community climate-risk assessments
  • Adaptation planning
  • Early-warning systems
  • Disaster-response volunteer training

4. Environmental Malaria Control

  • Vector breeding-site mapping and modification
  • Community vector-control volunteers
  • Biological vector-control interventions
  • Environmental surveillance

5. Extreme Heat & Occupational Health

  • Heat early-warning systems
  • Worker training
  • Cooling stations
  • Heat-protection materials
  • Community and national heat-health advocacy

Important: The US$1.8 million is a proposed fundraising target for Pillar 3, not a separate approved pillar budget stated in OHRI’s Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan provides an overall ten-year resource requirement of US$9.8 million for the entire organisation and does not assign separate dollar budgets to each strategic pillar.

Building Resilience Before Crisis

Climate resilience is not only about responding after disasters happen. It is about helping communities prepare, adapt, and protect themselves before climate and environmental risks become emergencies.

Invest in Climate Resilience. Protect Environmental Health. Strengthen Communities.
